History and traceability

The story

The cooperative was established in 2022 and currently has 64 members, comprising 20 women and 44 men.

The members gather on the 15th of each month to discuss plans, progress, and upcoming goals. During these monthly meetings, they also participate in training sessions.

Belco has since 2024 participated in these meetings, to stregthen the capacity of the members in post harvest handling. Some trainings are conducted on member farms, to enable practical demonstrations like ripe cherry picking, drying table construction and good coffee storage practices.

The cooperative members mobilized funds from among themselves and purchased land in Kikenene village. Here they constructed a coffee processing unit that includes a hulling machine and storage facilities to further promote and maintain the quality of their coffee

During the harvest season, each member picks and sun-dries cherries at their individual farms, after which the dried coffee is collected at the cooperatives processing centre for processing and marketing.

In 2024, with training support from Belco, Kikenene Coffee Farmers’ Cooperative began a journey toward producing specialty Robusta in Masaka region of Uganda, a region traditionally known for growing and selling commercial Robusta.

The Kikenene Coffee Farmers Cooperative was founded in 2022 by 30 members from the Masaka Coffee Cooperative Union. Officially registered in 2023, it now brings together 64 producers (20 women and 44 men). The cooperative is led by an executive committee and meets monthly to plan activities, review progress, and provide training on good agronomic practices such as pruning and selective harvesting.

The Kikenene Coffee Farmers Cooperative was created in 2022 by 30 producers from the Masaka region in Uganda. Officially registered in 2023, it now brings together 64 members, including 20 women and 44 men. Each producer manually harvests the ripe cherries and dries them in the sun on tarpaulins, directly on the farm.

The members meet on the 15th of each month to review progress, set objectives, and take part in training sessions on good agronomic practices such as pruning and selective harvesting. To better valorize their work, they acquired land and began building a processing unit equipped with a huller and storage facilities, enabling them to have greater control over the quality of their coffee.

This fine robusta offers a clean cup with a heavy body and a distinct sweetness, revealing a straightforward profile with notes of tobacco, spices, malt, nuts, and woody / leather
