José Padilla and Gonzalo Hernández launched the Coffea Diversa venture in the early 2000s with a radically different vision from traditional coffee cultivation. Rather than a mono-varietal farm, they envisioned a true coffee botanical garden, dedicated to the preservation, experimentation, and showcasing of coffee's genetic diversity.
Today, Coffea Diversa holds the world's largest private collection of coffee botanical varieties, with over 800 cataloged specimens, a large portion of which are still in the observation or selection phase. This unique collection constitutes a true living conservatory, conceived as a source of sensory innovation for specialty coffee.
Among this exceptional diversity, approximately 25 rare and exotic botanical varieties are currently produced as micro-lots, allowing for the exploration of unprecedented aromatic profiles, directly derived from the coffee's genetics.
Coffea Diversa coffees are cultivated on two main farms, located in Guatemala and Costa Rica. The Costa Rica farm, situated in the south of the country in Biolley, as well as in the Central Valley and Tres Ríos, is located between 1,250 and 1,700 meters above sea level. The coffees there are cultivated under shade and processed with a wide diversity of fermentation and processing methods.
More than a Producer, Coffea Diversa now stands as a key player in research and taste exploration, where each coffee is the result of patient work on genetics, Terroir, and processing. As they like to say: Coffea Diversa is not a coffee farm, but a coffee garden.
