The story

High in the Uraga woreda of Guji Zone, in the Tabe Burka kebele, at an exceptional altitude of 2,330 meters above sea level, Oboleyan Coffee Export PLC produces natural coffees. The region is surrounded by dense forests, with 1,650mm of annual rainfall spread across nearly nine months of the year. The soil is loamy and fertile, with a pH range of 5.5–6.5 – ideal for Arabica cultivation. To maintain soil health and prevent erosion, farms are intercropped with leguminous plants, and compost preparation is a key practice, aligning with Oboleyan's path toward organic certification.

This lot features 74110 and 74112 – heirloom landraces known for their disease resistance, high yield potential, and exceptional cup quality. These varieties are well adapted to Guji's high-altitude microclimate.

The harvest takes place from November to February, with selective handpicking ensuring only the ripest cherries are selected. The cherries are then sun-dried on raised African beds for 15–20 days, turned regularly to ensure even drying. This traditional natural process allows the fruit's intrinsic sweetness and complexity to fully develop.

Oboleyan Coffee Export PLC was established in 2018 by four brothers: Tariku Edema, Wendimu Edema, Demelash Edema, and Anteneh Edema. The name "Oboleyan" means "brothers" in the Oromo language – the language of the region where over 70% of Ethiopia's coffee exports originate.Before forming Oboleyan, the family had been in the coffee business for 15 years as coffee suppliers to the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX). When the government relaxed regulations in 2018, allowing private entities greater participation in the export industry, the brothers seized the opportunity to launch their own export company.

The exporter Barkume started his activities in coffee more than 20 years ago. The company is based in Addis Ababa and manages farms in the Guji appellation, on 4 main sites, with 4 washing stations. Barkume also works with more than 700 farmers from whom coffee is collected and then processed at the various sites. The company is currently managed by Tadesse Edema. Tadesse's father, like his grandfather before him, was already involved in the coffee trade. Tadesse has 29 brothers who, like him, grew up in coffee and all remained deeply attached to this product. If Barkume now exports its products internationally, from Europe to China, from the United States to the Emirates, it is in this region of Guji that the company has its roots, anchored and ancient in the sector. coffee !

Uraga coffee is sourced from smallholder farmers whose plots lie within a 10 to 20 km radius of the local washing stations. These stations, managed by private owners, act as central collection points, bringing together cherries from numerous nearby producers.

Situated in the renowned Guji appellation, the Uraga district shares its borders with Odo Shakisso and Hambela—both famous for producing exceptional Guji coffees. Yet, Uraga stands out not only for the quality of its cup but also for the deep-rooted history of coffee cultivation in the area. In fact, coffee growing in Uraga may predates that of its neighboring districts. Among the trees here is a rare varietal producing yellow cherries, known locally as Wallagga—a name that hints at the long journey and origin of these coffee trees.

Farming in Uraga follows a traditional polyculture system, where coffee is intercropped with various food crops. A central component of this system is the enset (false banana tree), a plant of immense agronomic and cultural significance. The root of the enset, when pounded and fermented, forms a staple of the local diet. But beyond its nutritional value, enset plays a vital ecological role. It stores water in its trunk, providing a steady source of moisture during dry spells. Its presence amidst the coffee trees helps maintain a stable microclimate, shielding the plants from harsh conditions and supporting year-round vitality.

This unique integration of ecology, tradition, and biodiversity makes Uraga coffee not only distinctive in flavor but also a testament to sustainable, time-honored agricultural practices.
