History and traceability

The story

This Natural processed coffee comes from the Eastern Province of Rwanda, a sun-drenched region where coffees naturally exhibit more body and a gentle acidity.

It is processed at the Taba station, opened in 2020 and equipped with 60 drying beds, which receives coffee cherries from the producers registered by Coffee Villages, the structure created by Tom and Sylvia Bagaza.

Prior to Coffee Villages, Tom worked for nine years on the USAID PEARL and SPREAD development projects, where he directly supported producers: structuring into cooperatives, developing business plans, professionalizing management, and enhancing quality. It was by witnessing the concrete impact of these actions on the lives of farmers that he wished to replicate this model in his own village, Taba.

With Sylvia and Australian pastor Mark Zschech, they launched a project centered on coffee production as a lever for improving local living conditions.

A Natural processed coffee that reflects the sun-drenched terroir of Eastern Rwanda and the commitment of Coffee Villages to the producers of Taba.

Coffee Villages was founded by Tom Bagaza and his wife Sylvia in 2007. Before getting involved in coffee, Tom worked on USAID (United States Agency for International Development) development projects for 9 years. Tom worked on the USAID PEARL and SPREAD projects between 2006 and 2014. Through these two projects, he worked directly with coffee producers, helping them to organise themselves into cooperatives, develop their business plans and professionalise their management. It was during this time that Tom witnessed the transformation of the lives of farmers and their communities through improved coffee quality and direct trade. A model that Tom dreamed of emulating in his community - the village of Taba.

In 2011, the couple met Mark Zchesch, an Australian pastor who runs humanitarian projects to help disadvantaged children in Rwanda. Sharing the same societal values, Mark, Tom & Sylvia decided to develop a project together to improve the lives of farmers through coffee production.

This speciality process dedicated washing station was opened in 2020 Rwanda, Eastern province, Gatsibo District, Muhura sector and Taba Cell. The station features 60 drying beds and a spacious warehouse. The source of water for processing is sourced from the hills'. The station employs around 75 individuals, permanent and temporary.
